NEWSIES STOP THE WORLD! (WIP)

"In the words of union leader Jack Kelly, we will work with you, we will work for you, but we will be treated as valuble members of your organization."

Welcome to my Newsies shrine!!! This one's been a long time coming. This is a MASSIVE WIP right now, as I have lots and lots of info to put on this page! Newsies is very special to me so hopefully this page can express my love for this silly musical. :)

WHAT THE HELL IS NEWSIES?

Newsies is a Disney movie-musical and stage musical about the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899. Joseph Pulitzer, owner of The World newspaper, unfairly raises the prices of the papers for the newsboys, who go on strike to put the price back where it belongs. It doesn't sound super interesting but I promise it is!!!

Newsies started as a campy, box-office flop of a movie musical in 1992, and was later adapted into a hit Broadway musical in 2012. blahblah

NEWSIES MEDIA/ADAPTATIONS!

HARD PROMISES (1991)

The original concept for Newsies, before the 1992 movie! Before Newsies was a cheesy family musical, it was originally a much darker drama-- featuring a dead younger brother of Jack's, most notably. Since this never came to fruition as a movie and isn't very relevant here, I won't get into it too much. If you're interested, you can read the script here.

NEWSIES (1992)

Where it all began! Newsies 1992, starring Christian Bale as Jack Kelly, released in theatres to... well. Not much. The movie totally flopped and was slammed by critics and has been known as pretty mediocre ever since. The movie had, and still has, a cult following though, even outside of your usual theatre kid fanbase-- older fans of Newsies likely prefer this version over the Broadway adaptation, at least in the circles I've been in.

BLOOD DRIPS HEAVILY ON NEWSIE SQUARE (1992)

A CLASSIC. This is, of course, not official media, rather, a shitty camcorder short film made by the Newsies cast during filming. I included it anyway because it's so funny and such a classic in the fandom. The story follows Don Knotts, a horrible actor turned away from Newsies, killing members of the cast as revenge. It is so fucking funny I can't even lie to you I don't think we ever need to keep making movies because they'll never be funnier than this. If you're interested, you can watch the entire film here.

NEWSIES: A NOVELIZATION (1992)

A promotional tie-in for the Newsies 1992 movie! This is almost certainly not meant to be looked into very much, being a classic kid's tie-in novel with movie pictures in the middle kind of deal. It's nothing crazy, but it's an easy and quick read for fans who want a little more. I certainly got a kick out of reading it! You can read a PDF of the book here.

NEWSIES PAPERMILL PREVIEWS (2011)

The very beginning of Newsies' stage adaptation! The show went through previews in the Papermill Playhouse, editing and changing the show as they went to make improvements before transferring to Broadway.

NEWSIES BROADWAY (2012-2014, 2014-2016) NEWSIES LIVE! (2017) NEWSIES JR. (2022) NEWSIES WEST END (2022-2023)

MEET THE NEWSBOYS (AND OTHERS)!

If you know anything about Newsies and it's fandom, you'll know that there are just an absurd amount of Newsies, and most of them are completely made up from some random 3-pixel picture of a white boy. Because of this, it'd take me forever to list every character, hahah-- I'll just be listing the important ones and any we have significant information about. If you're curious, a lot of the character details, especially for less important newsies, comes from their trading cards, which you can take a look at here! To be entirely honest this will likely also include generally agreed on fandom headcanons, especially when it comes to names and personalities. This is my shrine and I'll say what I want damnit!!!

JACK KELLY

The man himself! Jack Kelly is the leader of the lower Manhattan newsies and the strike.

DAVEY JACOBS

David "Davey" Jacobs is a new member of the newsies, joining after his father is laid off from his job. He is more intelligent and nervous than the other newsies, thanks to his nicer, wealthier upbringing (though not by much). He becomes Jack's right-hand-man in the strike and is quickly accepted by the newsboys as one of their own.
